זהו בדיוק ה fort Washington, מבצר שנבנה בשנת 1812 ושימש עד ל 1946 באופן פעיל להגנה ואימון של יחידות צבאיות. הוא נבנה על חורבות מבצר קודם שהושמד במלחמת 1812 והגן על נהר הפוטומאק בהצלחה במלחמה עם מקסיקו, במלחמת האזרחים, במלחמה עם הספרדים ובמלחמת העולם הראשונה. במלחמת העולם השניה הוא שימש כמחנה אימונים ובשנת 1946 הפך לאתר תיירות. המבצר (https://www.nps.gov/fowa/index.htm) נמצא כ 45 דקות נסיעה מהקיבוץ. אם נוסעים ישר בכביש הראשי החוצה את האתר ניתן להגיע למבצר מלמעלה אך ההמלצה שלנו היא לפנות ימינה מעט לאחר הכניסה, לכיוון המגדלור, ולהגיע אל המבצר מלמטה. החוויה הרבה יותר מרשימה כאשר עולים למבצר מכיוון הנהר והוא נחשף לפניכם במלוא הדרו. כאשר אתם מטפסים אל המבצר חפשו את התעלות המתחברות בגבעות הדשא, חוויה מהנה לילדים (ולמבוגרים!) למצוא אותן. בתוך המבצר תוכלו להסתובב לטפס על החומה, להיכנס לחלק מהחדרים שבמבצר, בתקופה שהיא לא תקופת קורונה יש גם מרכז מבקרים פעיל. אנחנו לא הספקנו להישאר ולראות את השקיעה מהמבצר אך יש לנו הרגשה שנחזור לעשות כן... מומלץ לשלב את הביקור במבצר עם ביקור בחווה קוליניאלית בפארק פארק Piscataway המופיעה בכתבה מטה של לי אבירם-ששוני: https://the-kibbutz-at-rockville-md.weebly.com/149614971493150014971501-15111510151214971501-148914881497149414931512/7465412 תהנו!

בימים אלו של קורונה חיפשנו יעד ב DMV שאליו אפשר לנסוע ללילה לצאת קצת מהשגרה ומצאנו מקום קסום.
אז קחו אתכם בגדים חמים ומזחלת וסעו צפונה (שעתיים, שעתיים וחצי). שבת בבוקר יצאנו לכיוון swallow falls state park. מקום יפה שבשילוב שלג ומפלים חצי קפואים ממש כאילו יצא מאגדה. יש מסלול של כשני קילומטר. מתאים לילדים ולמבוגרים. רק חשוב להזהר מלהחליק על הקרח.. ישנו במלון Hampton Inn Frostburg. מלון שעולה פחות ממאה דולר וכולל בריכה מחוממת וארוחת בוקר ממש נחמדה. אפשרי אפילו לשבת בלובי לאכול. בראשון אחרי ארוחת הבוקר נסענו לפארק הפעיל בעיקר בקיץ אך הסתבר שבחורף הוא פנינה בפני עצמו, New Germany state park. יש בהחלט דמיון לגרמניה בחורף. בפארק יש מסלול קצר של כשלושה קילומטר לאורך נחל. בנוסף יש בפארק אגם קפוא, המון שלג ומדרונות המתאימים לגלישה עם מזחלות שלג. בדרך חזרה עצרנו במסעדה מעולה ב-Cumberland Henny’s grill and bar ניתן להתרשם מתמונות שצילמתי באתר https://jennylerneryardeni.myportfolio.com/ תקופת הקורונה מספקת לנו אתגרים חדשים בחיים ואחד מהם הוא למצוא אתרי טיול מעניינים במרחק נסיעה מקיבוצנו האהוב. שיטוט אינסופי באינטרנט הוביל למציאת מערת נטיפים שחוצה אותה נהר והסיור בה נעשה בסירה! (Penn's Cave & Wildlife Park) קפצנו על ההזדמנות, ארזנו את הילדים וקצת בגדים ונכנסנו לרכב. המרחק למערה הוא כ 3.5 שעות נסיעה, מה שאומר שכדאי לשלב הנסיעה עם שנת לילה באיזור. בדרך הלוך החלטנו לעצור בספארי הנקרא Lake Tobias wildlife park בסמוך לעיר הריסבורג (https://www.laketobias.com/). במקום ניתן לעשות סיבוב של כשעה עם הרכב בסגנון ספארי (לא בתקופת קורונה הסיור נעשה באוטובוסים נטולי גג) ולצפות במגוון חיות הנפוצות בצפון אמריקה. כמו כן, ניתן לעשות במקום סיור רגלי במקום ולצפות בחיות אחרות מבעד לגדרות ואף להאכיל ג'ירפות! משם המשכנו בנסיעה לכיוון State college, העיר הנמצאת בסמוך למערת הנטיפים. בסמוך לעיר נמצא פארק הנקרא black moshannon state park והחלטנו להעביר בו את אחר הצהריים בצליית בשרים תוך כדי ניצול המנגלים ושולחנות הפיקניק המפוזרים בפארק. בתקופת הקיץ (יולי-אוגוסט) קיים חוף בפארק הניתן להתרחץ בו. בתקופות קרירות יותר ניתן לנצל את הפארק למסלולי טיולים קלילים. https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/BlackMoshannonStatePark/Pages/default.aspx את הלילה העברנו במלון ב State college שהיא עיר הסובבת סביב האוניברסיטה השוכנת במקום וכיף להסתובב בה ולהינות מהאווירה הסטודנטיילית. למחרת שמנו את פעמנו לעבר המערה, מומלץ להזמין כרטיסים כמה ימים מראש כדי לשריין את השעה הנוחה לכם. במערה נכנסים לסירה היכולה להכיל 22 איש (או 15 בתקופת הקורונה) ושם בשייט של 50 דקות המדריך המשיט את הסירה מסביר על ההיסטוריה של המערה ועל הנטיפים אותם אנו רואים. השייט הוא הלוך-חזור ומתחיל ומסתיים באותה הנקודה, באמצע השייט תתגלה לכם הפתעה יפיפיה שלא נקלקל לכם אותה... https://www.pennscave.com/ באתר התיירות של המערה ישנה אפשרות גם לעשות סיבוב באוטובוס לראות חיות האופייניות לצפון אמריקה אך לטעמנו הדבר היה לא הכרחי אם עושים את הסיור בספארי ביום שלפני. בדרך חזרה הבייתה עוברים דרך העיר הגדולה של האיזור, הריסבורג, אשר חוצה אותה נהר ה Susquehanna. אחד מהאיזורים התיירותים של העיר הוא City Island, אי השוכן במרכז הריסבורג וממוקמות עליו מספר אטרקציות כמו: מיניגולף, רכבת קטנה המקיפה את האי ועוד. אנחנו בחרנו בשייט על הנהר בספינת נהר אשר שטה בעזרת קיטור המסובב את הגלגל הגדול הדוחף אותה, זו חחת הספינות האחרונות מסוג זה הפעילות בארה"ב! במהלך השייט עוברים מתחת למספר גשרים יפיפים המחברים את שני חלקי העיר.
https://www.visithersheyharrisburg.org/listings/pride-of-the-susquehanna-riverboat/571/ תהנו!!! למרגלות השננדואה נמצא אחד המסלולים הכי כיפיים באיזור. ניתן לעשות אותו ביום אחד, לחרוצים שביננו, או לשלב אותו עם לינה של לילה אחד. לאחר נסיעה של שעתיים וחצי מגיעים לכביש צר שמתחיל להתפתל ביער ובין חוות. לאחר 15 דקות נוספות מגיעים לסכר מרשים ולידו חנייה למספר מכוניות. לאחר שהתרשמנו מהסכר ניתן להמשיך עוד מספר דקות בדרך עפר צרה כדי להגיע לחניה שבקצה דרך העפר. מצד ימין של החנייה ישנו שער ברזל למכוניות, עוקפים אותו רגלית ומתחילים לטפס בשביל אל תחילת המסלול (כ 10 דקות הליכה) עד שמגיעים לעמדה ובה ניתן לראות את מפת המסלולים באיזור ואת המידע עליהם. במהלך המסלול חוצים את הנחל שלוש פעמים! כאשר בנקודת חצייה השנייה ניתן לבלות זמן מה למשחקים במים ושחייה. לאחר החצייה השלישית של הנחל צועדים בשביל מתפתל לצד הנחל עד אשר מגיעים לעמוד אבן (ראו תמונה) המציין שהמפל ממש מעבר לפינה! המפל נשפך לבריכה המתאימה להשתכשכות (אך רק שימו לב לנחשים שנצפו מידי פעם במי הנחל). לינק למסלול: http://lets-see-america.com/big-branch-falls-in-virginia/ נעלי מים או סנדלים הם חובה, אורך המסלול מהחנייה הוא כ 2.5 מייל לכל כיוון אך הוא אינו קשה וידידותי לילדים.

את הזברה ניתן ללטף והחווה מאפשרת לילדים לרכב על פוני פעמיים במהלך הביקור! הביקור דורש תיאום מראש ואורך כשעה במהלכה אתם המבקרים היחידים בחווה. http://www.ddponyrides.com לאחר הביקור בחווה ניתן לנסוע מספר דקות לעיירה point of rocks על מנת להצטייד באוכל לפיקניק על גדות הפוטומק. שני מקומות פשוטים אך טעימים להצטייד בהם באוכל הם: https://www.pizzagrillontherocks.com http://www.aromahousepizzas.com משם ניתן לנסוע אל עבר ה Catoctin aqueduct למסלול טיול קצר או להשתכשך במים הנעימים (בתקופת הקיץ...) בנקודה שבאה מכניסים קייאקים ואבובים (lander boat ramp) למים ולאכול את האוכל שקניתם קודם. אין במקום שולחנות פיקניק מסודרים אך ניתן למצוא פינות מוצלות ונעימות לשבת. https://www.visitfrederick.org/listing/catoctin-aqueduct/30/ תהנו! שבת בבוקר, או באזורנו שבת או ראשון בבוקר, יום יפה, אבא קורא המון עיתון (הגרסה הדיגיטלית על הנייד), אמא שותה המון קפה (מהסוג הממשי שבאמת משפיע ולא הוירטואלי) ואחרי כמה דקות עולה השאלה – אז מה נעשה היום? אם הטמפרטורה סבירה (מבחינתנו 8 מעלות ומעלה כבר סביר), השמיים בהירים ורק השמש שקרנית אז כדאי לנצל את היום ולצאת לתור את ה- Great outdoors. יציאה לטבע לא רק ממלאת את הריאות באוויר קריר. היא גם משאירה את רוב הדולרים בתוך הארנק ולכן יתרונה כפול. לפניכם שתי הזדמנויות לטיול במרחק של שעה מה"קיבוץ" לבוקר שבת/ראשון יפה. במרחק שעה לכיוון דרום (או 41 ק"מ), על גדת הפוטומק שצופה על אחוזת ורנון, נמצא פארק Piscataway. הספקנו לבקר בו בקיץ ובשלהי הסתיו. על אף שהנופים השתנו מירוק לגווני החום, הפארק מציע כמה מסלולי הליכה שיכולים להתאים לכל עונה ולמשפחות עם ילדים קטנים כגדולים. התחלנו את הטיול, לפי ההמלצה שקיבלנו במרכז המבקרים הקטן הצמוד לחניה, באזור החווה הקולניאלית המשוחזרת באתר. החווה והמבנים מנוהלים על ידי עמותה עצמאית שיוצרת מגוון פעילויות ש"מחיות" את החוויה עוד יותר וכדאי להתעדכן לפני ההגעה. משם המשכנו לכיוון אזור חיות החווה הצפויות – חזירים, כבשים, פרות ותרנגולות. לא מדובר בעדרים, אלא בכמה פריטים בודדים מכל מין. עירוניים שכמונו תמיד שמחים לפגוש את חיי החווה, בנאליים ככל שיהיו. משם ניתן להמשיך למסלול הליכה לאורך גדות הפוטומק, שמסתיים בנקודת תצפית מדהימה על אחוזת Mt. במרחק שעה לכיוון צפון (או במרחק של 54 ק"מ) נמצא פארק Patapsco בפאתי בולטימור. אנחנו בחרנו ללכת לנקודה מסוימת בפארק – Cascade Falls. לא מדובר במפלים בסדרי הגודל של Great falls למי שהיה, אלא כאלה שמזכירים את הפארקים הלאומיים בישראל. שביל המסלול המוביל אל המפלים עובר דרך יער ולצד נחל זורם. לאורך ההליכה ישנן נקודות בהם גזעי עץ מחברים בין שתי הגדות, ומאפשרים למי שמרגיש יציב מספיק לעלות ולחצות את הנחל (הגובה מעל המים הוא כמטר וחצי). המסלול קל להליכה, למעט הנקודות של העלייה והירידה לאזור המפל, אך גם אלה נוחות אפילו למשפחות עם ילדים קטנים. בסמוך לחניון ישנו גשר תלוי מעל נהר Patapsco שמעניק חוויה ייחודית ותצפית מעל הנהר הזורם. אנחנו חווינו את המסלול כשהוא צבוע בגווני החום והחורף, אך אני בטוחה שבאביב הירוק ישטוף את המסלול ואולי אף ניתן יהיה להשתכשך במימי בריכת המפל הקטנה. שורה תחתונה – מה חשוב לדעת - עלות: חינם בקצרה: טבע וגשר תלוי אפשרי גם בעונות הקרירות: כן מתאים לילדים: כן זמן: שעתיים ויותר – תלוי כמה תתרחקו במסלול ובאיזה שלב תחליטו להתחיל את הדרך חזרה מה לכתוב בגוגל maps: Cascade Falls Parking Lot at Patapsco אתרים רלוונטים: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/maryland/cascade-falls-and-rootball-loop-trail https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/patapsco.aspx על מנת להתמודד עם גל העזיבות של אנשי קיבוץ יקרים, להלן מקבץ של מספר דברים שניתן לעשות בסופ"ש הקרוב עם הילדים...
